- Abstract
- The dataset on dumped munitions was created by CETMAR as a result of the aggregation of data provided by several sources or reports of OSPAR commission, MED POL, Spain Ministry of Defense and Maritime Administration of Latvia. Shapes with munition dumping sites define polygons and points features in Baltic sea, North Sea, Celtic Seas, Iberian Coast and Bay of Biscay and Mediterranean Sea. Information was picked form different official sources depending on the country. Each point or polygon has the following attributes (where available): type of munition (Conventional and/or Chemical) and distance to coast (meters). The distance to coast (EEA coastline shapefile) has been calculated using the UTM WGS84 Zone projected coordinate system where data fall in. The dataset will be updated according the availability of data and is available for viewing and download on EMODnet - Human Activities web portal (www.emodnet-humanactivities.eu).

- Supplemental Information
- Information in point format has been available only for OSPAR region. The point features data set was updated, and new 66 points features was added. Spatial entities for Baltic sea, Biscay Bay, Iberian Peninsula and W-Mediterranean area were selected and distance to coast was calculated in km. The coordinates of polygons of munitions dumping in the Mediterranean Sea have been taken from the report "AMMUNITIONS DUMPING SITES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA" from the MED POL (United Nations Environmental Program) 22 May 2009. In the case of Spain, coordinates provided by Ministry of Defense have been included in the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast. Munition dumping polygons sites in France have been also digitalized from marine charts available at http://data.shom.fr/. Dumping areas in Baltic Sea have been taken from “NOTICES TO MARINERS. 2014" (HYDROGRAPHIC SERVICE-Maritime Administration of Latvia) and "Report to the 16th Meeting of Helsinki Commission; 1994. Data from Cyprus have been updated from Department of lands and surveys of Republic of Cyprus. Validation and quality assurance remain up to primary data sources, while harmonization is carried out by CETMAR. For further information on validation and quality assurance, it is suggested that primary data sources are contacted
